Sleep Study
A Sleep Study, medically known as Polysomnography, is a comprehensive overnight test used to diagnose sleep disorders, particularly Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). It monitors various physiological parameters while a person sleeps, to evaluate the quality, pattern, and disturbances of sleep.
It is typically done in a sleep laboratory, but simplified home-based sleep studies are also available for screening certain conditions.
Indications
- Loud snoring
- Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
- Pauses in breathing during sleep (observed apnea)
- Morning headaches
- Insomnia or restless sleep
- Unexplained hypertension
- Suspected sleep apnea, narcolepsy, periodic limb movement disorder, or REM behavior disorder
