ICD Insertion

ICD insertion in pulmonary practice refers to the placement of an Intercostal Chest Drain (ICD)—commonly known as a chest tube—into the pleural cavity to drain air, fluid, pus, or blood. It is a life-saving procedure used in a variety of thoracic conditions such as pneumothorax, pleural effusion, hemothorax, or empyema.

The tube helps re-expand the lung, relieve pressure, and allow for ongoing drainage.

Indications

  • Pneumothorax: Especially large, recurrent, or tension type
  • Pleural Effusion: Especially when large or recurrent (malignant, tubercular)
  • Empyema: Collection of pus in pleural space
  • Hemothorax: Accumulation of blood in pleural cavity
  • Post-surgical drainage: After thoracic surgery or trauma
  • Chylothorax: Lymphatic fluid collection in pleura
