COVID-19 Infection
COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, a novel coronavirus that emerged in late 2019. The infection primarily affects the respiratory system, but it can also involve multiple organ systems. COVID-19 ranges from mild upper respiratory symptoms to severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and multi-organ failure, especially in vulnerable individuals.
Common Symptoms
- Fever
- Dry cough
- Fatigue
- Sore throat
- Loss of smell (anosmia) and taste (ageusia)
- Shortness of breath
- Muscle aches
- Headache
- Diarrhea or nausea (in some patients)
- Rashes or skin discoloration (in children and some adults)
Severe Symptoms (Indicating complications)
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Chest pain or pressure
- Confusion or altered mental status
- Bluish lips or face
- Low oxygen saturation
Prevention
- Vaccination (primary series + boosters as recommended)
- Wearing masks, especially in crowded or closed spaces
- Hand hygiene
- Physical distancing
- Avoid touching face
- Good ventilation
